Occupational therapy or special education?

Does a child have to have an IEP and special education services to receive private speech therapy?

  • I know a parent who wants speech therapy for her daughter but Chicago Public Schools is unable to assess her for special needs at this time. The parents would like for her daughter to receive services right now, but they are being told to wait for the public school system to evaluate. Is there any way around this?

  • Answer:

Private? They'll spend for the therapy themselves? The therapy clinic can do an assessment themselves as to what the child needs. The sessions can start immediately as soon as possible. It is recommended, however, that the child still undergo consultation with the public school system for the paperwork. More highly recommended is a visit to a Developmental Pediatrician (privately if they can afford) who can accurately assess the condition of the child and make direct and concise recommendations to the therapists on what exercises the child has to perform. Without a DevPed., therapy would be surely insufficient.

no, they don't have to wait! - they can have their own evaluation done, and have speech therapy done privately without waiting and without involvement of the school.

of course not, it was probably a suggestion....a parent can seek any type of medical care/therapy without involvement from teh school and the school can't say they can't do it--they have to find a way--i beleive federal law (IDEA) is they must complete the evals within 60 days (for a child under 3 it would be the state early intervention system)

No, if you, the parent are willing to pay for the speech therapy there is no need for an IEP. The IEP is strictly for school and there needs to be an academic need for speech therapy in the public school system, meaning the child's speech affects her academic success in the class room. In order for the parent to have her daughter looked at by private speech therapist, the daughter would need to have an evaluation done by a doctor that refers the daughter to have the speech therapist assess her. I'm gonna tell you something. I work with Special Ed students and most parents don't know their rights with their own child in a public school setting. If your friend wants them done right now then they can go ahead and find someone who is willing to evaluate them personally, however the school needs to also have them done so that way the school will get the tax credit that they need and want. So what I would do if it were my child is I would talk to the principle of the school first, make an appointment, and tell them that your child deserves the same rights as every other child in that school and if they don't want to do anything about it, hire a lawyer who will go after the school board. If you want you can have them threaten but not in a mean way while they are at the appointment.
