What is Morquio Syndrome?

I need info about morquio syndrome?

  • I am doing a school project on morquio syndrome so can anyone help and give me info on it plz? It would be really cool if someone who had it could help too!

  • Answer:

I had to do some search as I have not heard of this syndrome before. Morquio syndrome is an inherited disease of metabolism in which the body is missing or doesn't have enough of a substance needed to break down long chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans (formerly called mucopolysaccharides). The defects maybe present at birth, but as the child develops the symptoms become more apparent, such as; Coarse facial features Large head (macrocephaly) Knock-knees Widely spaced teeth Bell-shaped chest with ribs flared out at the bottom Short stature with a particularly short trunk Hypermobile joints Abnormal development of bones, including the spine Normal intelligence The disorder is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. The Morquio gene is located on chromosome 16 (in chromosome subband 16q24.3).
