How to improve reading comprehension skills?

How can I improve my reading Comprehension skills?

  • I am law student and I have been diagnosed with ADD How to make studying more interesting? How can I improve my reading Comprehension skills in too many texts?

  • Answer:

If you can find a class - I highly recommend taking it. I took a Reading Comp class as a freshman in high school. If that's not available to you or you can't do it (try - make every effort - it is so valuable). Here are some tips that have helped me. 1. Read each word carefully. Read a sentence more than once. Try to summarize as you go along with your reading. Make note of characters, settings, what is happening, etc. 2. Pretend you are a detective. 3. Read actively. Question. Seek to find answers. Take notes. Reread sections. Don't read passively - read actively. Inquire. Be curious. Be inquisitive.

As you read, note down any words or phrases you do not understand. Look them up and then read the material again. Practice visualizing as you read. How would the material you are reading about look in 'real life'? Write a LOT. The more you 'construct' with words, the easier it becomes to automatically translate them into visuals as you read them. Read for short periods with frequent breaks in which you turn your mind to something entirely different than what you have been reading about. Intersperse your reading with periods of physical activity. Create an environment for reading with as few distractions as possible.
