How to become a firefighter?

How do you become a firefighter in Southern California?

  • I am currently 21 years old and I have decided that I want to be a firefighter. My question is, what are the best steps to take for the position I am currently in? I am currently finishing up my Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice at Cal State Long Beach and I will graduate after the Fall 2010 semester. What is your advice to me as to what I should do to meet the best qualifications to become a firefighter? I appreciate the help.

    My bother's been a firefighter for 12 years and I hear him compare the profession to that of the bomb disposal squad. Qualifications wise, you can get going with a high school diploma though an AS or BS degree in Fire Science along with Firefighter-1 testing is a definite advantage. What matters more is that you're physically fit, believe in teamwork and are good with tools (chainsaws, fire extinguishers, ladders).

You will need: Firefighter 1 Academy EMT-B (Paramedic is desired) Experience is a plus along with being bilingual You have a bachelors degree so that will definitely help you out A degree in fire technology or fire science would be in you favor Also be persistent continue to call and get your name recognized. I do have to warn you though, I have applied for 3 years and got nothing and thats with 7 years in. GOOD LUCK THOUGH!!!!

* get into good shape, especially your Cardio, you'll need it. *AS/BS in fire Tech/Science if you want to rise up in the ranks of a department. *EMT lic or if you can Paramedic * Firefighter-1 Academy, and there are many of them in So Cal. then start testing at every department in the state and if you can AZ, NV, UT and OR as well. your degree in Criminal Justice opens up a few other doors that might otherwise be closed such as Arson Investigator, and others that deal with Fire enforcement.
