Polite people who have Asperger's, please help me!?
-
I've been so pissed off at all the "proud Aspies" telling me autism's great and I should learn to be accepting... but now I feel like a jerk because I've started generalizing all people with Asperger's to be rude, ignorant morons. I have 3 younger brothers who have severe autism. We have to bring wheel chairs and helmets around with us for the older two boys' safety. All 3 of them do not have verbal or non-verbal communication skills. Some people with autism may be gifted, but my brothers are not. Also, I do not believe there is a cure, and I don't sit around a cry all day long, we are always trying to get out and have fun despite the challenges, and I am very proud of my brothers. I want to walk in an Autism Speaks walk because it will raise awareness for autism which we desperately need. I know it's not the best charity in the world, but it certainly is the largest. Do you think that would be okay? Can you be reasonable with your explanation, and NOT include how autism is fantastic because it might be for you- and that's great- but it's not for us. I really need to hear some nice people with Asperger's' opinions on the matter. Thank you

Answer:
Well, though I'm not quite "proud", I do like myself the way I am. I do try to be polite about it, though. I'm not a big fan of Autism Speaks. Quite frankly, I think they spread the wrong kind of awareness. While I recognize that some people have problems with autism, I don't think saying autism is a terrible "epidemic" helps, and I don't think that looking for a "cure" is a good idea. You can't cure a personality, at least not with a clean conscience. In addition, Autism Speaks doesn't take people with autism seriously--they don't include them in the process at all. So I would suggest finding a charity which approaches the subject in a different way. There's nothing wrong with the idea, it's just that there's better charities out there.

I am not an Aspie but my sons are. I agree with Michael. Autism Speaks is NOT respectful of people with Autism. The attitude seems to be that ASD is a horrible thing caused by vaccines that must be eradicated. What would the world be like if all the people with Autism were "cured"? I think it would not be a good place. There are more tolerant Autism groups that you could make a commitment to. Why don't you do a bit of research and see if you can find a charity that is more accepting of people with Autism?
