What are the symptoms of ADD in teens?

How do i tell my parents i suspect i have ADD or a learning diability?

  • How do i tell my parents i suspect i have ADD/ ADHD or a learning diability? i have all these symptoms of ADD or a potential learning disability. How do i tell em. i mentioned the symptoms before but they just shook it off. what should i do? i;ve taken all these online tests and 99 percent say i need to go to a doctor to get it checked out or officially diagnosed. but how do i tell em. they dont listen. Oh and just fyi, many girls with ADD tend to be overlooked and 50 to 70 percent of girls don't know they have it. because girls arent disruptive and loud. and if its inattentive ADHD, its when someone just seems to be quiet and stares into space. so many teachers and parents just sweep it off. i suspect i have that sort cos my excessive day dreaming is affecting my mathematic and geography school work. im 13 and i eat well and sleep well. i don't have alot of stress. its quite average. Any parents or Teens? answer sensibly!

  • Answer:

My parents shrug of anything like that, like me being diagnosed with dyspraxia and depression. You should be able to make an appointment with a doctor without your parents knowing. Or there should be someone at your school you can contact, like a special needs adviser or learning support or something who will know what to do and get you the right tests - then your parents only have to be involved after the diagnosis, if you wait for them, you may be waiting forever while your work and life is affected.

I wouldn't rely a lot on online tests, most are bogus and few are dependable enough to really be sure of identifying diseases/sickness/learning disorders/etc. If you're parents are shrugging you off about ADD in general, you might be able to suggest to them that you're having problems concentrating in school and would like to see someone who might help. If they still shrug you off, just go up your school counselor when you can at school and ask her if she can help you out. She won't be able to prescribe anything without a parent's permission, but she'll be able to see if you do have ADD or ADHD or something or nothing. Counselors are pretty reliable, since they gain nothing from you having a disorder or not and are trained to spot kids in need.
