Babysitting a child with Tourettes?
-
Im babysitting a child with Tourettes syndrome. I have expirience with children with disabilities (i.e: handdicapped, adhd, etc) My sister has Down Syndrome, so I understand children with disabilities very well. The parents of the child I am babysitting say their son is very shy because of his Tourettes. Im not the genetic "pop a movie in and text while they watch" babysitter, I'm very hands-on. Are there any fun & stimulating games I could play to get the boy comfortable with me and to play instead of be alone in his room? Thank You!

Answer:
People with Tourettes syndrome are NOT disabled. It is classed as a behaviour problem. I have Tourettes syndrome and am not shy, not all people with Tourettes are shy. He could possibly be shy because he may have been teased. People with Tourettes syndrome are pretty much just as normal as any other person in the world. When we tic it is out of our control. We do not mean to do it, we just do it. He is probably just a shy person or could be afraid of people judging him because of Tourettes. IT IS NOT A SIDE EFFECT OF TOURETTES SYNDROME. Sometimes it takes people time to come to terms with it. He should interact with you like a child who doesn't have Tourettes. The shyness isn't usually a side effect of Tourettes, but everyone is different and people cope with it differently. Some people with Tourettes have it mildly. Others have it quite seriously. There is a stereotype that all people with Tourettes curse. This isn't a myth as some people do, but not all of us curse. Some of us just have thought tics, this is where we think things that are a little inappropriate. But we don't mean to think them. We do it unconsciously and it is not done on purpose. Other tics can be vocal and we can also have tics where we shake our arms and cough etc. To get him interacting with you you should approach his as if you would do a person without Tourettes. If this fails you should talk to him about a subject of his interest and let him know he can trust you. Here are some links to websites that might help you understand what Tourettes is.

you mean a generic pop in the movie type tourettes is more of a medical problem that a disability like you are more familiar with... do you know what kind of tics he has...if they are mild, its easier...but if they are sudden and exaggerated or loud verbal tics you might startle which could bother him... try not to be preoccupied with them... start activities and give him a chance to approach you..or ask if he's like to join you-just as you would any shy child. i worked with a toddler that was so painfully shy, the parents had to let every other person go....the 1st day I walked in--walked to the other side of the room without even acknowledging the child and began playing..once she showed interest--i pushed the toy toward her and stepped back...she slowly started to tolerate interacting
