Answer:
Tourettes Syndrome is a neurological disorder that cases uncontrollable movement and sounds called tics. Much like a cough or sneeze, people with Tourettes Syndrome cannot control these tics. While Tourettes does cause Tics, it does not have any negative effects on those with it. People with Tourettes Syndrome can go to school and work just like everyone else. Even though Tourettes effects the brain, it does not effect how intelligent a person is.

People who have tourettes syndrome say things involuntarily, (without meaning to). Its as natural as if you sneeze, they would say something, usually inappropriate. Some people with tourettes syndroms say curse words, some make noises like beeps or whistles. Sometimes when the person is nervous or stressed they are more likely to say something inappropriate. TS is related thought to be related to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is caused by a chemical problem in the part of the brain that controls automatic functions. Think of folding clothes. After you learn to fold clothes, your hands sort of do it automatically. You just do it without having to think about it too much. TS and OCD are sort of the same, except that the part of the brain that would normally say "stop, that's not right" is overridden by the desire to say (as in TS) or think about (an obsession) or do (a compulsion) something inappropriate.

Well neurological means related to the brain, so Tourette's in a brain disorder. Tics can take many forms. My son blinks his eyes a lot. In fact, he has blinked his eyes so much before that they were swollen from overworking the muscles around the eyes. Vocal tics can take many forms. My son makes this sort of slurping noise over and over which can be really annoying. He will also cough or clear his throat over and over. He does not say any words, curse words included, thank God, but that can happen. Motor tics take many forms. Shoulder shrugs, hand tapping, neck stretching and facial grimacing are some motor tics. Anyway, that may have been more information then you needed. This site seems to break the information down a little as to be more understandable for younger kids.
