i was wondering what the youngest age is that a child can be diagnosed as having ADD/ADHD? also, if a child is diagnosed if there's any medication that can be given to child to be more stabilised and calmed down - if there's any medication at all for it... or if you have to wait until they get older?

Answer:
Many children are diagnosed in the first few years of primary school, however some are diagnosed in preschool years, due to their impulsive behaviours, appears to be attentive, inability to focus on tasks & or instructions given, easily distracted, wriggles & fidgets etc. If you believe your child may have ADHD/ADD then speak to your doctor he/she may refer you onto a pediatrician or clinical/educational psychologist, who will do a full assessment of your child. There are a number of medications used for ADHD/ADD, and if your child has either ADHD or ADD, your pediatrician should talk to you about what your options are, medication, behavioural modification, dietary control etc. And a good pediatrician will monitor the child development and changes in behaviour, on a regular basis if you decide to medicate your child. My daughter was 9 when she was diagnosed with ADHD, ODD and Dyslexia, we were honestly quite shocked about the ADHD & ODD, but when we looked into it, the diagnoses fitted her to a tee. She was the most obstinate child, actually she still as an adult lol. We were very weary of putting her on medication, but we decided to try it, along with behavioural modification management, routine, set rules & guidelines with consequences for being naughty or breaking rules & guidelines, and we also watched her diet, no junk foods, colourings, food additives etc, chocolate & red cordial were her main triggers for behavioural out bursts. We would only give her the medication through the school terms, and give her a break during holidays. When she was 15 she refused to take the medication, as it was "not cool" to take medication at school, (school policy was students had to go to the school nurse to take their medication). We agreed to let her not take it, but under an agreement that if she started struggle with focusing etc, then she would have to start taking the Ritalin again. Thankfully she did not have to take the medication again.

do not drug your children, speaking both as a diagnosed add / adhd / dyslexia / dysgraphia and later grad student of cognitive psychology. i can tell you that you need to learn to deal with it. drugs like ritilin are bad. not because of there chemical properties (those are quite benign.). but because they are horrible for social development. young children who get drugged into placidity do not learn self regulation or social regulation. they can learn how to read and write but they are frozen at the age you start drugging them in terms of social development. do you know what Ritalin is? its called Methylphenidate, does it look familiar? it should. its almost chemically identical to methamphetamine more commonly know as crystal meth. raising kids is hard, raising kids with adhd is even harder. if you take the easy route for your self you are permanently punishing and damaging your child. you wouldn't punch your child in the face. why would you punch them in the brain?

In my country (Australia) a brain scan is often used to diagnose ADHD and I know of children diagnosed as early as 6 months old. But this is very rare, especially in countries like the USA where the sheer number of people needing the diagnosis means they brain scans aren't used. The age of diagnosis will depend on the severity of the ADHD. A very severe case of ADHD will be diagnosed between 18 months to 3 years. Moderate cases are usually diagnosed around the time the child starts school because this is the first time they have been required to sit still and concentrate for lengths of time as well as being compared to other children more often. Females are often not diagnosed until the teen years because female ADHD is made much worse by female hormones and these go crazy around the teen years so females with ADHD tend to go crazy then too. Medication can be given as young as 3, in some severe cases even earlier. But it is usually not stimulant medication. Doctors are not recommended to give stimulant medication before 6, but in severe cases it has often had to be given between 3-5 and there have not been any problems. The only reason doctors are asked not to prescribe so young is because there is not as much information available about the affect on young bodies.

Usually a child is diagnosed from age two on into adulthood. Most drugs that are prescribed are Ritalin or a derivative of Ritalin (Adderall, an Amphetamine of some kind, etc.). The problem with giving a child such a drug is that it interferes with their sleep, growth, and eating habits. Plus the doctor, child, and the parents have to find the correct dose and the correct brand. This rarely happens on the first try. It can take years of close supervision.

about 3 or just under--there may be red flags earlier, but it may be hard to get a diagnosis unless its sever--docs don't like to medicate before age 5.. there are lots of meds one drug is caffeine..the other are mostly prescription stimulants, although there is a non stimulant
