How do I become a school psychologist?

Do you need to go to Med School to become a child psychologist?

  • I want to go to England for college, but I'm not sure if being a psychologist will need to go to med school. Any help on being American and going to a British college would be appreciated also! xx

  • Answer:

Depends on what you mean; therapists don't necessarily have to go to med school. But if you want to be Dr. Meggers, you might.

You do not need to go to med school to be a psychologist. If you want to be a psychiatrist (they can prescribe medication), then you do have to go to med school. Psychologists are the ones who typically counsel and/or do research. To be a "licensed child psychologist" you will need a bachelor's degree (4 years) . It would be most helpful if your degree is in psychology or a related field. After your bachelors, you will need to get a PhD in psychology (that takes on average 5 years). If what you want to do is counsel children, then you could go another route..... you could get a degree in "counseling." To be a licensed counselor you don't need a PhD (though you can get one if you want). You only need a master's degree (this typically only take an extra 2 years after the 4 years it takes to get your bachelors). If you want to go to England for your bachelors, that is no problem. Just major in a field related to psychology or counseling. When it comes time for your graduate degree (masters or PhD), then you may want to consider coming back to the United States simply because you will be preparing for licensure exams that are specific to the United States. If you want to stay in the UK for graduate school, I am sure you could, but I would consult one of your psychology professors regarding how easy/hard it would be to obtain licensure in the United States after getting your degree in the UK.
