What should she do to become a fragrant specialist?

I am curious what needs to be done to become a reading specialist?

  • I am currently getting my teaching credential for elementary school and I will also be getting my masters in teaching. I have been thinking of possibly going the route of reading specialist. I know my credential and masters should still work for that but what else will I need to do?

    Certification as a reading specialist depends on the state in which you live. Contact your state board of education to find out the required courses. In Ohio, the individual universities decide which courses are necessary, so this could be a question that you ask your advisor.

To truly specialize in reading you might want to become familiar with the extensive body of professional research available. Unfortunately, the recent literature is showing that universities are not properly preparing teachers to deal with true reading problems. Maybe start with learning about the big 5 in reading (link below) and then move to studying info. from The Florida Center for Reading Research (link below). If you have access to EBSCO host you may want to do searches there or brush up with the National Reading Panel's 2000 meta analysis study. If you just want the title, I can't help much. In the schools almost anyone can get the title. I'm still dealing with "Reading Specialists" coming to SSTs saying K and 1st graders have reading comprehension problems. We have to explain that if a child can't read fluently and accurately he is probably not suffering from reading comprehension. Best of luck.
