Why do people think Aspergers means mentally retarded?
-
I have the Aspergers syndrome, and earlier, while bored, I was looking it up, most sites say it means your retarded and all that ****. My SPED teacher even treats me like a 6 year old(I'm 13). For example earlier today, when I was making the trollface and singing "trololol", she came up to me and said "Gavyn, why are you doing that? Are you a little too happy?". And she only acts lille this when I'm around people, she treats me normally in the SPED room. Not only is it my sped teacher treating me like this, but a majority of the students do this, too. When I revealed that I had Aspergers , People were acting like I was some alien with a contagious disease. I'm not asking how to stop others from doing this, if I have Aspergers , it is likewise that people will do such, but I want to know *why* they think Aspergers is some mental retardation. When I read a paragraph out loud, my History teacher was surprised, she was talking about it during lunch.. "I'm very proud Of Gavyn! He read a full paragraph out loud today!" Of course I can read, my mom's been teaching me how since I was 3 -_-

Answer:
People with aspergers are actually very intelligent. I too have aspergers but I haven't told that many people so most people don't know that I have it because I want to be treated like everyone else. But the problem is that people know that something is up, they have no idea what aspergers is but they know that there's something different about me so they find me odd or strange so they single me out. I've been singled out all my life, I've had people say hi to everyone but me, invite everyone to a place except me and just say bye to me, I've had people ditch me, act nicely towards me then act different in front of a group of people, it just hurts, it really hurts, but I still stay strong, and you can too. Just ignore the BS and blow them away with your knowledge. I'm actually a very fast learner except for when it comes to math and I'd say I'm pretty intelligent. People don't know what aspergers syndrome is they think that because of the word "syndrome" that it means you're mentally retarded because of down "syndrome". That's my guess at least, but people who don't understand other people tend to be mean to them and treat them differently than everyone else, I wish it wasn't like that but I can't change it all I can do is hang around the people who accept me for who I am.

I understand quite well how you feel and it is irritating as hell. That is when you need to continue doing what you have been doing and proving them wrong. By proving everyone wrong, you would not only educate everyone about Aspergers but you would also educate everyone about the people who have Aspergers. People think Aspergers means "mentally retarded" because they are the stupid *sses here and that is why it is important that you prove them wrong. BTW, if anyone calls you "Retarded" due to you disability than you need to tell them to "Pick up a dictionary, read it, and expand your vocabulary because it is very limited at best." I will guarantee one thing that it will shut them up.
Whatever
I am in a college class where I am learning sign language. Even though I am the slowest learner in the class, my teacher and the other students in the class appraise me for getting my sign language right!

Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I think that some people behave like that dues to being ignorant about what aspergers is. But you may be taking things a tad too personal. I'm sure if I was in school still and was doing the troll my teachers would have said that if they were nice. If they were too annoyed with me they would have just yelled at me to cut it out. And reading aloud is an acheivement for a lot of kids with aspergers, so perhaps your history teacher was just basing her reaction on what she knows of the disease. If you feel that someone is treating you in an odd manner then explain that to them. As for the websites, its the internet and there's not anything you can do about that. Just avoid sites that offend you.
