What are the good residential schools for autistic children in England?

Would schools (in the UK) for black children assist them in higher education?

  • A third of the most capable black pupils are not entered to take the hardest papers at 14, with the presumption that they would fail, and it is also said that even now, in the early 21st century, Black-Caribbean children are undergoing a version of 'institutional racism' which was rampant in 'normal' schools throughout England thirty or so years ago, with teachers presuming behavioural problems twinned with lack of academic talents. No one seems bothered about Muslim and Jewish schools - would black schools improve the achievements most children strive for, without them being either ignored or prejudged to be 'trouble' on account of his/her confrontational stance?

  • Answer:

I think there is more to this than just racism, most teachers are white middle class and female. There are cultural differences (such as eye contact) that are not taken into account, the fact that a white middle class female may not have any thing in common with a black male teenager is totally ignored. Although our education system has evolved it is still descended from one designed for white middle class children. There are schools that to all intents and purposes are black schools ie 90% of the pupils are black. But the teaching methods and the teachers are not. Not all kids fit the system and it would appear that black males make up a large number of those who do not fit. Just separating people on grounds of colour will not work. Looking at the cultural differences and creating an education system that is accessible to all would go part of the way. Raising peoples (all peoples) expectations of what every child can achieve would also help. When was the last time you saw a black actor play a lawyer on tv? If you can remember one he/she was probably American. Before the national curriculum was introduced it was wildly believed that girls were not too good at maths and sciences and better at languages and arts. After the national curriculum girls were forced to take maths and science, or rather the teachers were forced to teach these subjects to girls. Suddenly girls started achieving in 'boys' subjects. I do not believe #black schools' to be an answer but a lot more can be done.

Muslim and Jewish schools are separate on religious grounds, not racial grounds. Besides, teachers do not presume behavioural problems: kids are either badly behaved or they are not.

There's no such thing as "black schools" in the UK..I live here and I recently left school..the black girls in my school achieved and were very successful with their gcse's and a levels and many of my black friends are going on to university...no different to white girls or any other origin.

Who gives a ****. The government can't afford to build new schools for black kids so as they can learn better.

Every child in a publc UK school has an equal footing. Problems outside the school are outside the school. The "black community" is nothing like that of 30 years ago in the UK any more than the "white community". Would "white schools" have the same effect for white kids?

I can't believe this has even been suggested. We are striving for equality and integration and someone has suggested separating children because of there race! I am a secondary school teacher and I believe and have seen proof that having mixed ability classes raises standards among those who are achieving below the national average standard. As for commenting on Muslim and Jewish schools - they are the same as Catholic schools. I work in a Catholic school and it is not just Catholic children there - anyone can be accepted regardless of religion. It is just run with a Catholic ethos.
