  To be an aide (or "paraprofessional"), you have to obtain a Educational Aide/Monitor Permit or Educational Paraprofessional Associate License through the Ohio Department of Education (See link below). Here are the requirements: 1) Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (defined as 48 semester or 72 quarter hours as verified by a college transcript from an accredited institution of higher education*); OR 2) Obtain an associate (or higher) degree from an accredited institution of higher education (defined as an associate degree program from an accredited institution of higher education); OR 3) Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment – (i) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics; or (ii) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in readiness for reading, writing and mathematics. AND 4) A passing score of 456 (out of a total of 480 possible points) must be obtained on the Praxis II Parapro test in order to meet the requirements. 5) Then a paraprofessional application for license can be completed. To be a special needs teacher in Ohio ("Intervention Specialist"), you need to enroll and complete a 4-year college/university for "Intervention Specialist", pass the Praxis, and obtain your Ohio teaching license.
