What is the drop out rate for kids with Learning disabilities?
-
One person answered me in another posting just because they are promoted does not mean they passed. Why promote them? It is time to stop making excuses for kids with LD and try to find a way to teach the same high standards to them but present the high standards in a different way. I am not talking about mentally retarded or slow learners, but kids with moderated learning disabilities. In my time I gave up on school because school gave up on me.There was no help in my time. I fell through the cracks and society still holds me accountable for something I had no control over. Do you all think I am uneducable and beyond help. Why is it my fault? I use to be told it was my fault for not trying harder?

Answer:
The drop out rate for high school kids is at about 30%. That number includes those with learning disabilities. This is an appalling figure, and I'm sure the reasons are as varied as the kids. Some regions in the US have higher rates than others, but it averages out to about 30%. I'm sure lots of these kids would say something similar to what you stated - fell through the cracks. I know my son would agree. I certainly wouldn't say you are uneducable. Your spelling is impeccable, or you at least know how to use spell check, and that's a lot more than some of the questions and answers I've seen in YA. My older son finally went to adult school to work on his diploma, and he had a lot more success there than he had in high school. I'd like to encourage you to complete your diploma. It will give you a really good feeling of accomplishment just proving to yourself that you can do it. And, it will be one less strike against you.

kids with LDs are going to have a horrible time in school because alot of teachers don't believe that kids can have an LD, instead they think the kid is lazy. there are ways to teach kids with LDs, it is just time consuming and difficult, since there are so many different learning styles. if you have an LD it is not your fault. you are born with it. you are deffenately not unteachable. and skru whoever told you that it is your fault for not trying harder. im sure that the drop out rate is high, because kids with LDs feel stupid and give up.

It is time to stop making excuses for kids with LD and try to find a way to teach the same high standards to them. I agree they shouldn't just pass kids up the grades that haven't earned it. Otherwise the graduation or degree doesn't mean a minimum standard was met. Teaching those with learning disabilities is more expensive and harder but they should be taught what they can learn. My great niece has Down Syndrome and the school has been great with her. She has a team of people working to make sure she gets all the education she can. Her parents, teachers and other educators have meetings and decide the best way to teach her and solve any problems she has. Her mom volunteers in her class and she isn't always one of the 6 slowest pulled for extra help. When she has a social problem like she doesn't approach kids to play so felt left out at recess they figured out giving her a jump rope got the other kids to come to her to play. She is starting second grade, loves school and is learning. If she graduates from high school she should know as much as the minimum required or more. If she only has a 8th grade education after 12 years maybe she shouldn't graduate. But she should learn as much as she is personally able to learn.
