Speech therapy and special education ?

  • Why when a child has a speech impediment(like not saying the word correctly, doesn't say every sound etc) they refer to speech therapy as special education? Because my 3 year old, knows everything he should and then some for his age. He goes to speech therapy and he's far from needing a "special education"

    Three years old is sort of young to provide speech therapy, unless there is some other concern, like hearing impairment, CP, or autism. I've seen six year olds refered for /s/ sounds when the only thing "wrong" was they were missing teeth in front! its actually a related service to special ed...if its being provided through an IEP, they just call it special ed..schools often won't even provide services at all for this....

Speech therapy is included in special ed. Any child who needs an individual education plan ("IEP") is placed in "special ed", even the gifted students. Why? Multiple professionals are involved in your child's care, and they all have goals meant to help him. Parents go to the IEP meeting with everyone who is involved in his care, including the parents (parents have the final say in what those goals are by either approving or disapproving them and by giving valuable input). Special ed funding is usually different from regular classroom funding because of the fact that so many personnel are involved. They usually are paid more than classroom teachers because of their level of specialized training and expertise.
