Is a provisional worker job secure?

IHSS home interview tomorrow, but worker just said that my severely autistic 3yr old was too young to qualify!?

  • my daughter needs to be monitored day and night. she has no words, and understands no words either. She has bad judgement, cannot distinguish between edible and inedible objects. Is strongly disoriented, she doesnt know who I am & If you let go of her hand she will go missing. She darts off to the street if the door isnt secure. She has had many many accidents jumping out of windows and bruising her head during meltdowns. She has Sensory Integration Dysfunction and is hyper responsive to light, sound, and touch. She has tantrums that will frighten others when self injurious behaviors begin. She also suffers from sensory food aversion, only eats chicken nuggets and will gag and possibly vomit if they are not cut in a quarters size. How is it that IHSS cannot aid these types of children?? My daughter has been rejected from day cares and no babysitter wants to take my daughter for regular pay. I had to quit my job after a major accident that resulted in my babys face being scarred. Why does IHSS say that my daughter doesnt qualify? The worker just asked me "does your daughter have respiratory problems? no, oh well I dont think you'll be getting hours"... are you serious? What can help my daughter then? Im pretty much stuck here. =(

  • Answer:

any 3 year old needs to be monitored day and night you need environmental controls....how is she getting the windows open...always keep the door secure--if you have to add locks that are out of her reach... you can try a helmet. i started working with 'these types of children' when I was 14 and did fine....came home bruised from time to time, but handled it...started at $3/hour have you tried the nearest college that has a special ed degree program? maybe contact a school that provides autism services and ask if you can place a notice.... you should be registered with the division of developmental disabilities...in my area they provide respite providers (babysitters) as well as other services....if you are low income your daughter might be eligible for SSI.. she should be getting school services---is she in full day school? now in my professional role, I have worked with families with great babysitters..... IHSS services vary by state, my state doesn't pay caregivers at all from what I have been able to find. If i lived near you, I'd babysit 1 night/week...would do more if I could... IHSS was meant to be a program to keep people at home instead of sending them to a nursing home or other medical care facility
