Help with an Autistic child in my child's class (Violent and mean)?
-
Alright I understand that this child has a problem and needs special patience my questions are this. How do I help the parents get the one on one aide that they feel their child needs we live in WI??? How long do I allow this to be the excuse that the child hits my child???? How long do I allow this child to ruin my both of my children's lives at school as the child takes a strong dislike to my youngest. Who I have told to just stay away from the other child but this child actually seeks my youngest out and is mean than when I ask the parents what we should do and this is never done in a mean why and they always say it's just the why it is, their child can't help it and what do I want them to do? Before anyone slams me I understand that there is something a little off with this little person that even they themselves don't understand and that there is a different way of handling things. Also understand that my child knows that there is something wrong with the other child my youngest kind of gets it. Now my oldest will defend the child remind and coach the child, tell the other children to be more understanding in short she is a mini aide at the age of seven? No one has informed the whole class only the teachers so my child is always defending this child. The other day tho she said I am not sure if it's just what wrong with him or if he is just mean mommy! What do I do I want to be understanding and supportive but no one is suppose to have more rights than anyone else. Yes I know only in a perfect world. But when does someone else's rights trump anothers??? Please help I do not want my children hurt anymore but I want this child to have the best education they can have also???

Answer:
Autism is most likely not the cause of the other child being violent. Students that are autistic can have sensory overload which may cause them to meltdown so ask your child if the room appears to be loud or if there is lots happening in the room at this time. If it's not, the child may just be acting out because he is not getting his way. Many parents do brush this off as the autism but do not realize that autism does not cause them to be mean. It also could just be that because autism is a social disorder, the child may not understand how to interact and does not realize that what they are doing is not an appropriate way of playing. He may just be doing something that he has seen modeled somewhere else and believes is right. Talk to your child's teacher about your concerns and if this done not help, go to the school administration

Full inclusion is currently popular. To be politically incorrect-- The district doesn't have to hire as many SPED teachers and the emotionally disturbed child's parents want his or her child to "fit" in with the normal kids in the regular classroom. For some reason parents, who have children who are disruptive, think their child gets an appropriate education buy disturbing the learning environment. Document everything Tell the principal Change teachers Go to a different school You didn't state the age, but depending on the state, the student could get a ticket for disrupting the class and fighting- That's up to the school police and the administration.

Have you talked with the school officials? Do they know there is a problem with violence from this child? Your children should not be hit in any way at school whether the child hitting has autism or not. Advise the other child's parents to meet with the school officials to discuss their child's behavioral issues. They may not want to but they need to or this problem will only get worse and they may end up liable for injuries inflicted on others by their child. They have to have documented proof that the child has issues amongst other things in order for the state to agree to pay for a one on one aide. As crappy as it is funding for those types of things is hard to come by and that makes it difficult for a special needs child to get approved for extra help. Please stand up and speak out to the school officials it is their job to ensure EVERY child has a safe educational environment.
