Did your son with Asperger's Syndrome ever get bullied in high school no matter how hard he tried in hs?
-
I have Asperger's Syndrome. Before I entered my Freshman year at high school, I have been going to a school for special needs children - teens with Autism Spectrum Disorders since I was 10 years old. I have gotten as much support and help as I could and I did change, because back when I was a kid, I was kind of difficult to manage. I entered high school and tended to do my best to complete class and homework assignments, follow the school code of conduct, make friends, and succeed. During the first few years, I have been in a number of classes with my special education program (It wasn't the developmental disabilities type of program I was in) and I did go to some mainstream classes, and during the later years and now, I do better. I did have some issues in school, no matter how hard I tried. I mostly held back from being angry, upset, and doing things wrong. I did try my best to interact with friends, but didn't do anything with them outside of school (mostly inside). My best friend in my program and I have been doing stuff outside of school over the weekends since he and I entered Freshman year. I tried my best to make conversation (but only what topics I had in mind, and about THE INCREDIBLES, the film I LOVED SO MUCH back then). Typically when it's about making friends, it's about getting to know each other. But there was one mistake I made. Whenever students could react to what I say as if it was awkward, I could tell they would find it awkward, but I never know what makes them awkward, no understand why they would think it was awkward. I cannot stand to hear people cry (even babies). When we watch a film in a class or whatnot, I walk out on the crying. I got nervous and anxious easily back then, but now I don't. Students have made crying noises at me to be mean to me because of the fact that I hated to hear crying sounds. I have been telling my teachers / staff members / security / etc.. about my situations with students making crying noises at me. I always wanted them to take disciplinary action taken on the culprits who treated me unfairly with their type of business like they really show their hatred towards me. Among the people I've talked to at the school was my social counselor. She told me, "They do it to get a rise out of you.". I have done my best to take her advice. Ignoring never helps. I didn't expect them to be so immature and obnoxious. No matter how friendly and helpful other peers were toward me, they still were prone to belittling me vocally whenever they had the chance. They would do it! During my later years at high school, I have learned and read that students with (physical and mental) disabilities / special needs become easy targets for bullying, all which include those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (even Asperger's Syndrome itself). I have gotten many good grades, and passed both the MCAS and SATs. I have been on the Honor Roll, First Honors, and Second Honors. I have been on the Dean's List for many years. I did perform in two spring plays and tried out for one year in track. I do plan to take outdoor track this year. I am currently ending my postgraduate year at the school and plan to go onto college to do art, photography, design, maybe other academic courses as well. Maybe the more years I get into with my studies, I plan to become a student teacher observer in mainstream classrooms at a few public high school, then return as a teacher (depending on how knowledgeable I get and depending on what academic). Did your son ever face similar situations in high school in regards to his AS disorder / disability? Please be sure to tell me what you know. If I have anything more to say which I forgot or didn't get a chance to say, I will add some details sometime between after I post this question and how many have answered.
