How do I become a nurse for special ed classes?

  • I originaly wanted to become a special ed teacher, but now, as a sophomore in high school and volunteering in a hospital, I want to become a nurse, and work specifically in the special ed classroom setting full time. What is this job called? How can I get a job like this? I plan on getting my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, along with my Master's in Nursing to become a Registered Nurse before working full time. Then, I want to start working. Help please!

    The type of nursing duties you are interested in are available in large school districts, and you would have to investigate those job opportunities through the school district employment websites when you are ready to work. When you attend nursing school, you can talk to your counselor to see if you can take focus classes that deal with children with special needs. There are several public school special education centers in my area, and one special education High School just a block away, that all employ nursing staff. Some students at the special ed high school require nursing daily, as many have medical issues that must be addressed constantly (meds, dressings, tubes, breathing, etc.) The hall and classrooms are big enough for passing wheelchairs and gurneys. I applaud you for wanting to serve these kids who are struggling against great odds to live their lives to the fullest.

There a few opportunities out there that I know of working in a "Special Education" setting as a nurse. There are some group homes that are specifically for children intensive special needs. They have severe neurological disorders or live on a trake (breathing tube) that must be monitored 24 hours a day. Sometimes I see a (1 on 1) nurse opening opportunity to work with students who have feeding or gastronomically issues in public schools. I have seen Registered Nurses working at adult day care programs for adults. They monitor clients health during adult day care programs, and are encouraged to participate in their social activities instead of sitting there in the back of a room doing nothing all day.

some students who are medically involved will have 1:1 nurses with them in school...usually RN's but possibly a practical nurse..many work through staffing agencies. you could also be a school nurse and focus on jobs in special education schools..you do need a special masters for this (school nursing)
