  • ok so i have like 10 friends that have dyslexia and they ask me for help but i don't know how to help them can you tell me what dyslexia is and how i can help?

  • Answer:

What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is not a intellectual problem, and many dyslexics have above average IQ. Dyslexia is where the brain misinterprets what it sees and hears. Which then causes the person to have difficulty with either all areas of learning or just maths (dyscalculia) or handwriting & spelling (dysgraphia). Unfortunately there is no cure or treatment, except to find out exactly how the dyslexia affects them, and are they a visual, auditory or Kinesthetic (hands on) learner, by knowing these strategies can be put into place to help the student learn. Dyslexia causes difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, maths, memory, sequencing skills, reversal of letters, p, q, b, d, m, w, and some numbers, transposing of words such as was to saw, omitting words and difficulty pronouncing words, especially unfamiliar words, and confusion between left & right and difficulty reading maps etc, and some people complain of headaches, words blurring. Or person may only have one area of difficulty such as Dyscalculia causes difficulty grasping math concepts, struggles to do multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, fractions, formulas, confuses math symbols and remembering times tables. Numbers can be reversed or transpose 519 might look like 915 or 17 looks like 71, 9 & 3 might look like an 8 etc. Or Dysgraphia where the persons hand writing is very messy, words can be a mix of capitol and lower case letters, words can be squashed together or to widely spaced, spelling difficulty and some letters such as b, d, p, q, m, w etc are reversed. How can you help? Be understanding that your friends can't help their difficulties with spelling, hand writing, reading and maths etc, which causes them a lot of stress and frustration. When their struggling be patient and supportive, try not to jump into quickly to help them, let them try before helping them, and when you do help try to explain a question, do so in the simplest way, to help them understand. When you correct spelling just underline the word in red they spelt wrong, and write the correct spelling in red, on the side near where the incorrect spelling is. See the last link below as it has a list of the most common spelling mistakes, homophones, spelling rules etc, which are very helpful for dyslexics. (I have mine laminated and keep them handy) When reading encourage them to take their time, if they use their finger as a guide that's fine, if they stumble over an unfamiliar or trouble pronouncing a word, let them try a few times, before saying the word for them. And ask them to repeat the word a few times, before moving on. When writing, encourage them to take their time, and if their really struggling give them a copy of your notes and or work copied from the board. (the school should be happy for this to happen) If your friends are having difficulty with maths, give them a copy of the maths symbols and their meanings, and times tables, laminate them and keep a copy for school and home. When doing maths use graph paper to help keep numbers inline and help you add, divide, multiply etc. Use clear step by step examples how to do addition, division etc. Encourage them to take their time, if they are allowed. Using scales, measuring cups etc to help teach fractions, addition etc, (I hate fractions but using measuring cups etc, I have a much better understanding). Use other methods of learning such as visual, auditory, such as calculators, abacus, blocks etc. Both my daughter and I are dyslexic, and I use most of the above for my students with dyslexia and other Learning disorders.

It's when you process reading and verbal material differently, many dyslexics are affected in different ways, some may have problems reading and writing, some may have trouble seeing the information and processing it, some may have difficaulty getting thoughts and ideas on paper and in the correct sequence. It's a variation of things and consists of a lot of characteristics that vary from mild to severe. Someone may have a couple mild characteristics but one symptom may be severe, etc.

Dyslexia is a problem with reading and writing. It can cause some people to spell things wrongly, sometimes getting letters backwards, or words, or even entire sentences. The actual word is two latin words - Dys Lexia meaning a problem understanding the lexicon (Lexicon is the alphabet!). Some people with Dyslexia also face other disabilities such as Dyscalcia - Problem with numbers (again Latin - Calcia - Calculations) Dyspraxia - Problems with hand-eye co-ordination (such as riding a bike) Asperger's - Form of high functioning autism - problem with communicating between friends but can make the person quite highly intelligent about one specific area (I have this) OCD - Obsessive compulsive disorder - Very obsessive about doing things - such as cleaning, etc ADD/ADHD - Attention Deficit (Hyperactive) Disorder - Hard to maintain attention for long periods of time, unless the actual thing is something that the person has a severe interest in then they can become hyperfocused (I have ADHD as well), also can have hyperactivity associated with it which can cause uncontrollable outbursts when eating or drinking certain chemicals such as certain E numbers (Sunset Yellow is a good colour for this!), high amounts of sugar, caffeine, etc. On some occasions people with these disabilities can also face more embarrassing problems such as Nocturnal Enuresis (Bedwetting) which can prevent them from going on sleep overs.

When someone without dyslexia reads they hear the words in their mind , put them together and then comprehend the meaning. They have built up the ability to do that from the language skills they have developed. One way to look at dyslexia is to consider that dyslexics have a sensitivity to auditory and visual noise. Without the ability to separate out the noise language skills are harder to develop . Sounds that would normally be associated with letters or words have been contaminated with outside extraneous noise and are more confusing. Hearing a particular sound at different times may generate many different mental memories because of the different background noise . When applied to reading that causes confusion over what sound memory is the correct one to select from the text. Sensitivity to visual noise can cause visual problems with seeing text clearly. There is different kinds. Some completely flip the letters some scramble them up and other invert to writing of the words. Servere kinds of Dislexia are combinations of these things. To help your friends you would need to take some courses.
