How do I become a massage therapist?

How to become a massage therapist?

  • So I have been thinking that I would like to go into massage therapy and I was wondering what requirements and qualifications you need to become one? Do you need to go to a 4-year college or just a massage school and for how long? What are some good skills for this? Please be as descriptive as you can, thank you.

  • Answer:

No requirements other than them accepting you! My schooling was an intensive 16-week course in Portugal. The school is based in Vermont, but they have a Portugal program every year which appealed to me because housing is included, and you are in a gorgeous country. Also to be able to just focus and learn without worrying about bills, life, etc. It's a skill you learn. Some it comes more naturally. I went in 2004, and back as the assistant in 2010. It was a great experience both times...and awesome getting massages everyday!

Other answers

Some community colleges and technical colleges offer programs in message therapy. Some are a semester in length. Others may take a year. The programs at technical and community colleges are less expensive than those at private massage schools. I would recommend that you complete one of these programs because the people I know who have completed programs in massage therapy have had difficulty finding jobs. They did not get tuition refunds when they were unemployed. Therefore, it would be unwise to go into debt to pay for the training.
