Why do I have a learning disability?

Why cant i get a disability check for a learning DISABILITY?

  • some people say its not a real disability... then why is disability in the name?

  • Answer:

A learning disability although frustrating, affects the way you learn, it can limit some types of work you apply for, because you may not be able to read or write, however it does not prevent you from working at all. Generally disability checks are paid to people who have physical, intellectual impairments and or mental health problems, that prevent them from working full time or even part time work. Yes some people do get paid disability if they have epilepsy or other serious medical condition that impairs their ability to work, because their condition is unpredictable or unstable. If your learning disability is so significant that you need constant supervision and prompting, to do the work, then reapply for disability, but you need to have it well documented that you need supervision etc to work, as well as the exact nature of your learning disorder. My daughter and I are have dyslexia, I am a qualified Youth & Disability support worker and teacher, and my daughter is a qualified Disability support worker. I am unable to work full time due to an acquired physical disability, which causes a lot of pain and a inability to walk, stand etc, but I try to work part time. My employers know I am dyslexic and they also know I have an acquired disability, late last year I had to let the disability support work go, as I was unable to lift and transfer clients any more.

A lot of people say "learning differences" which is a more accurate term in many cases. SSI is for people with SEVERE disabilities who cannot work. Most people with learning disabilities can get a job, even if it isn't a great job. Weather or not YOU can get disability would depend on the level of your challenges and your IQ in addition to other things. You can try but if LD is your only issue you probably won't get SSI.

It depends on your disability. Does this disability keep you from getting a job? Disability checks are for people who can't work because their disability affects their performance at work. If this is true with you, try getting disability again. I know people who get a disability check for obsessive compulsive disorder. Try again!

it is a real disability, but by definition is is NOT severe, there are jobs you can do..and therefore it does not qualify for a disability check are you saying you can't mop a floor or make a bed or other routine jobs like that? your high school should have set you up with job skills and jobs that you can do.. you should contact vocational rehab and they can assist you with job training. there is no learning disability that prevents a person from working.... people who get disability for it are committing fraud....and some have been caught.. I am blind in 1 eye, that is a mild disability..i could never play pro ball as there is a slight issue with depth perception..it would not get be disability benefits. my foot and knee have osteoarthritis--it limits what I can do physically, but there are jobs that can be done with these conditions. i had a friend in college with a cleft palate..she had a speech disability, but there was no reason she couldn't work people with diabetes have a disability--they can work until there are severe complication.. most disabilities are mild, many are moderate, only a small portion is severe enough to qualify for a check i knew people with mild cerebral palsy--that is a physical disability, but it didn't give them a check

To qualify for SSI the disability needs to have significant limitations with marked impairment. Also, there are income limitations. It is not uncommon though for people to be denied only to be granted disability after an appeal. You only have a small window to appeal it, if there is a possibility of getting approved, go for it.

I have seizures and it took me a few times to try and I finally got a disability check. Same for a lot of people.
