What are some good study techniques for dyslexic people?

  • I have a big vocab and history test coming up. There's only one problem... I'm dyslexic. I don't know how i'm going to study with something like that blocking me. i need some techniques for my studying. and oh yea... is there a such thing as a olive diet. (i didn't wan't to waste 5 points asking another question-teehee) if there is an olive diet, is it good for you

  • Answer:

Unfortunately there is no diet or treatments for dyslexia, except to learn exactly how it affects you and finding strategies to help you learn. Make sure the area your doing homework in has plenty of space, with good lighting and a comfortable chair, have dictionary and text books at hand, along with pens, paper and high lighters. Including a drink of water. Turn the phone, mobile and tv off, they are very distracting. Break study sessions in short periods of 30-45 minutes, especially if there is a lot of reading involved. Plan you study time, and stick to it, and make sure family & friends know not to disturb you. Study when your at your most alert, prioritize work load, doing the most urgent first. Reward yourself for completing work and staying on task for a while, especially if its a boring subject matter. Take notes as you read, and note the page it came from so if you want to go back and reread that section later you can find it with ease, or use flash cards or if you own the books use a highlighter or pencil to underline key words or sentences. Don't try and cram study at the last moment, you wont retain the info, its better to do it in smaller chunks over a few days. Have a study group of friends, where you can discuss certain time-lines, the people involved in it etc and then you can ask each other questions If your a visual learner draw a few blank lines, and add dates, location, event & the key people involved in the historic event. When I was studying I used a lot of the above, to help me learn and remember what I had learnt. I also found having a study group really did help, if we discussed the information etc. Both my daughter and I are dyslexic too.
