What does it take to be a freelance animator?

What courses do you have to take in order to be an animator? ?

I'm a freshman. And I'm planning to study animation :) right now I'm taking band and a language class. But I was wondering what classes could I take that would help me for my career. I was think that art could be a good choice but I'm not really sure. I would appreciate some nice answers :) xo

Art or fine art and art history :) You have to learn about the basics and history before you can jump in! Also, what type of animation? Are you more skilled with your hands and clay or more skilled with a PC? Animation takes immense patience as once spent two weeks making one clay guy move three inches with facial expressions!!
