  • Answer:

1/ Turners syndrome can be diagnosed at birth if the baby girl has some of the physical features of Turners, the doctors will then request for special blood test to confirm turners, and if it does they will then request a number of other tests, to check for kidney problems, heart problems, hearing difficulties, overweight, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems and some MAY have learning disorders. Baby girls who don't have any visible signs of turners are usually diagnosed around puberty, when they fail to develop at puberty or they don't start to menstruate when they should have. Turners syndrome, is a genetic disorder that affects the female chromosomes, females usually have two X chromosomes, males XY, with Turners the female only has one X chromosome, or part of the X chromosome is missing. 2/ Woman with turners syndrome can have problems with learning, and they most certainly do have problems with self esteem & self confidence, due to their physical appearance, learning problems etc, so they can suffer from depression. 3/ Yes woman with this disorder can lead a normal life, especially if their condition if picked up early enough, and some of the medical conditions managed or treated. 4/ Life span there has been some suggestion that woman with Turners syndrome may have a reduced life span, due to heart & weight problems etc. But if the woman is careful with her diet, manage her weight and have regular health check ups they can have a normal life span. In 2010 I worked with a young woman with Turners who had recently been diagnosed with Turners, after she had failed to develop at puberty (she was 18). Apart from being a little short and webbed neck, which gave her an appearance of having a short neck, she looked fairly normal, and she had a minor learning disorder. She was glad to find out why she was not very tall and not developed properly at puberty, but she was saddened to learn she was unable to have children.
