To what extent is formal education effective?

To what extent today's education is life oriented?

  • Answer:

Not at all. School does not teach the same stuff that it used to. Kids graduate and don't know how to cook, clean, balance checkbooks, do laundry (just ask college freshmen what problems they have). As a Special Ed masters student we learn ways to teach kids with disabilities how to do these things because they're not taught in regular public education. I think it's a shame and something really needs to be done about education in this country. Because realistically how many people need to know calculus for their adult lives vs. doing laundry.

Very little if you are talking about skills that one will carry over into adulthood. The math my kids are learning is very dysfunctional as it would take them 45 minutes to compute how much they would save if a store was having a 30% off sale. (They would have to draw diagrams and pictures to figure it out) Also education focuses too much on memorization of fact and very little on application of those facts. Thanks to the implementation of NCLB children are taught to pass the test. Sadly though the world does not work in "state testing" mode.
