What can one do with an MA in Education?

If you were a school principal would you hire a teacher with a MA in Special Education or Literacy?

  • If you were a principal of an elementary school and were looking to hire a teacher for a general education class, would you be more likely to hire a teacher with a MA literacy or an MA in special education? Please explain why? Lets say you were to pick between 2 teachers with the same amount of teaching experience. One has a MA in Special Education and the other has a MA in Literacy. Which teacher would you prefer?

  • Answer:

It would depend on the job opening. If the job was in special education, then I would hire a special ed teacher. If the job was a regular education, I would pick the teacher that I liked better assuming they were both certified for el ed. Working in a school environment, I will tell you that there are more openings for teachers who are special ed certified. Another big need is ESL (English as a second language).

it depends on what the bachelors is in-- you need a certified elementary teacher.... a special ed teacher is not certified to teach elementary ed unless that was their bachelors... Literacy? depends on what that degree means.. it would also depend on the kids in the class.. i'd have to know what specific reading programs each were experienced or familiar with
