Can someone receive a Doctorate in Ozone Therapy?

Someone PLEASE READ? My daughter's school/teachers/mental therapy/ what do I do?

  • Okay I've been going to therapy for almost 2 years now for panic attacks. My daughter has seen me having panic attacks before I could control them, so I put her in therapy b/c she started to get them and then I thought she was ruined for life. My daughter been going to individual therapy and family therapy for 6 months . My daughter gets real nervous at school during school work, what child doesn't. Since my daughter's grades aren't up to par they want to get her tested for a reading disability. I shared with her teacher many months ago that Kaylee was now in therapy, because she has a panic attack on the playground and the school called me. I didn't think she was going to bring it up in a school meeting with 7 other counselors, principal, in the room that we go tp thearpy. They wanted all the notes taking from my daughter's therapy session, so I did sign the release. I then sent a letter saying that I take back me wanting to release my daughter's info b/c that's our personal business. In the first meeting I started crying when her teacher made comments like " With that test the grade was disasterous!" Some other lady that worked for the county said " I thought that was her strongest subject." And laughed while saying that. Another meeting is coming up which is the 2nd meeting and I don't want to go. I felt roasted it's just me in there defending myself. In the letter I wrote said I didn't want her records to be released, I said can she tested for the disability test only. They wanted to look at her mental history first. I haven't seen the school since our first meeting, t I sent a letter saying they can't see her mental health records. Advice ?

  • Answer:

Good for you. It is YOUR child, it is YOUR decision on what you want the school to know, see, etc. How can having panic attacks cause a reading disabilitiy? The idiots. Did they say WHY they think she has a reading disabilitiy? Have they shown you proof in black and white? I would write to them and ask that you are requesting 'prior written notice' per IDEA law for their legal reason for wanting this testing. Tell the therapist right away that you did sign release of information for them to give the school, but you changed your mind and tell the therapist to NOT give them ANY info! Did you sign anything for the therapist stating they can give the school this info? If so, write and retract this agreement. If anyone in the school is laughing about your child, they are NOT on her side or your side. Since you agree to the testing, you may not know this -- School does this testing ONLY to see if child qualifies for special ed services. They do NOT do testing 'just to see' what problems a child has. The problems will show up in the testing, if there are any, but they do not do testing 'just to see' what the problems are. OK, if this is what you want, for them to see if she has reading problems enough to qualify for special ed, a meeting is NOT legally required at this point. Schools keep having meetings to get you off track, to intimidate parents, etc. And you have seen yourself this is what is happening. What you do at this point is write a letter to the district special ed director stating you DO want the evaluation done to see if she qualifies for special ed, but you have already sent a letter to xxx (name) stating you do NOT agree to giving information pertaining to therapy. And that you are not going to attend meeting of xxx date because it is not legally required in IDEA law to have a meeting BEFORE an eligilibilty evaluation is performed. Did you sign a form agreeing for them to do this testing? If not, they can't do it. You have to sign an agreement form. And they are lying, they do NOT have to see any mental history first before they do the testing. If you asked IN WRITING for the testing to be done, they have 60 days from the date you give your written agreement to have the eval finished. They can't put any stipulations on it (i.e. wanting mental history first) If you need any help email me [email protected]

This isn't you against the school. It is everyone trying to figure out what is best for your child. They would like to test her for a learning disability, but if she gets panic attacks under those circumstances, they need to weigh the potential benefits from testing her against the potential harm from having her go through testing. Your changing your mind repeatedly is turning this into a bigger deal than it needs to be, and I'm sure all of this is having an impact on your daughter. My sense is that at present, you don't trust the school officials. Your choices, therefore, are to put your daughter into a different school, or to just say no, we don't want to address these issues until you can get her into another setting. I don't know how old your daughter is, but if this degree of panic is common at home, it isn't surprising that she isn't doing well at school.

ok. I'll answer you though I think I'm a bit bias being a teacher myself. (first year) but I know about many medical problems so I can understand. At the school, they pretty much need to ask your permission about the therapy results HOWEVER they should deal with them discreetly. I believe that they are going to use them to get your child help. Counseling at school etc. I do think that they've gone way too far in their comments about your daughter's results. It is understandable if things aren't right then why should her marks be? They are reflective of one another. If you don't want them to have her results. You have sent your letter...good. I would go and ask for her records and remove them. ask in a civil way of course (not saying that you wouldn't but just to keep them from getting defensive) Explain that you would like her results and you feel that they are not treating her in an acceptable manner. I would suggest talking to the original counselor about what you did not agree with.

The school is required to get your written permission prior to any testing for special services. You need to write a letter revoking your consent to release any medical information and give a copy to both school and therapist. If you do consent to her being tested, you still have to consent in writing for them to provide services she might qualify for. Nothing, basically, can be done without your written consent. Go into that meeting fully informed of your rights. empower yourself.

My advice is to take someone with you that you will feel will also have your daughter's best interest at heart. I agree that the school does not necessarily have to have the notes about her mental health in order to test and diagnose a learning disability. If you do not have a family member or friend that you wish to take with you then you need to find an advocate. In fact, I think an advocate would be a great idea for you because I think that you would feel more comfortable if you had a professional to ensure that you and your daughter are treated with respect and that the school does exactly what they need to do for your daughter. If you do not know how to find an advocate, look in the phone book and online. There should be one in your area. Good Luck!

First, is your daughter on medication? I have had panic attacks along with clinical depression for well over 12 years. The medication that I am on helps a great deal. (some changes had to be done at the beginning to find the right medication for me and the correct dosage. If you are subject to panic attacks and still have them, I would suggest getting a child advocate to go with you to your child's IEP meeting or any meeting with the school where her problems are going to be discussed. Do not, unless you desire, release your child's mental health records to the school. (The walls have ears, if you know what I mean). Also, if your daughter is receiving therapy outside of school, then do not let the school provide therapy as well. One or the other.

First take a deep breath. When it is time to go to the meeting - bring a friend - doesn't have to be someone who knows special education but another adult to listen and take notes for you and then you can review them together later. It's hard to say what you need, listen to what they say and make decisions - many times after wards it's "gee what did that mean - or did we talk about ...." Having someone that you trust take notes for you will be helpful. When a school is asking to see medical records it typically is for one of several reasons - 1 - are there some accomodations for testing or a better test to ensure they get the information they need and your daughter is less stressed. 2 - students have to qualify to get services in a particular area - sometimes just for academics the scores have to be too low to get assistance but other categories might work and medical records can help to figure that out. 3 - to determine a reading disability or any academic disability your child will take 2 kinds of tests - one is an IQ the other is an academic test (Woodcock Johnson being the most common) if the score on the academic test is quite a bit lower than the same section of the IQ test she would qualify. There is no other way in a school setting. 4 What I would be thinking if I were the special ed staff in the district is that if her emotional state makes her difficult to test - she might then qualify for Emotional or Behavior Disibility in that category they could address things that may be stressful for her AND get her the academic support she needs. Please give your school a chance to supply the needed services to your child - they are not going to share your personal information but it is critical to know what is going on to coordinate services. Good luck
