If I win a contest for a scholarship to any school of my choice, what does that mean exactly?
-
I'm a junior in high school, so if I win this contest and I tell them what university I want the money to go toward, then what happens if I don't get into that college? Or do I have guaranteed admission or what? Or if I do win this then will it look good on a college application (it's a poster designing contest for the ACT)? Sorry if this sounds stupid, I'm just really confused about this kind of stuff. Thank you!

Answer:
If you win the scholarship contest, they will follow their rules, which usually means once you are accepted to college, you will let them know where to send the funds. Sometimes they will only send to the college, and sometimes to you. Check out the link below for some other scholarship contests. Good luck.

No, you don't sound stupid, these are legit concerns. They will usually hold the money until you make a decision on a school AFTER you have been accepted. Then they will usually make arrangements with the school to put the money on your account to pay for tuition, or board. If the money is for any school, you do not have guaranteed admission. The school doesnt need to know on the application that you won a scholarship, but it is a good thing to show them that you won an award, especially if the award has to do with what you plan on studying. Also, after winning the scholarship they will let you know how things work in details. so no worries.

They would either just give you the money as a check, or you let them know later which school you will be attending and they'll deposit the money with your school and they'll credit it against your cost of tuition. (That's assuming it meant as money for you, not as a donation for general educational purposes that would go to the school more generally) This is not directly connected to any college admission (no guaranteed admission or anything), but yes, winning contests is something positive to add to an application.
