Question about Financial Aid FAFSA?
-
This may sound confusing, but here goes. I'm a college student, a sophomore to be exact, and I'm 22 years old (birthday is in November). Now I know how the FAFSA works... I'll explain my situation... I apply every year for the FAFSA to recieve free money from the gov. that I don't have to pay back, BUT I'm considered a Dependent so they go by my parents income, and apparently my parents make too much money, so I never qualify for financial aid, ONLY LOANS. Now, I know that I must be A) Married to qualify for the free money, B)Have a child to receive free money, or C) Turn 24 years old. My question is, I just turned 22 on November 3rd, on what academic year will I qualify for the free finanial aid money when I turn 24. I will turn 24 years old on November in the year 2010. Will I qualify for financial aid for the fall semester of 2010? I will turn 24 AFTER I submit my FAFSA, so will I actually start qualifying on my own the year after I turn 24, which would be the year 2011? I'm really trying to figure out when I will be able to qualify for financial aid on my own and not have to use loans anymore. Its very stressful and confusing!! THANK YOU

Answer:
You must answer the question 'as of today'. So, for the next FAFSA: 09-10 FAFSA - Were you born before Jan 1, 1986? 10-11 FAFSA - Were you born before Jan 1, 1987? 11-12 FAFSA - Were you born before Jan 1, 1988? Until you can answer 'Yes" you are considered 'dependent'. That said, once you complete a FAFSA you cannot change your marital status. If you do your FAFSA during the year you are 22 or 23 and you are single 'as of today', but get married a few months later, you are single for the entire fiscal year. You cannot change your marital status until you complete the following years FAFSA. I hope this clears up some confusion.

Your FAFSA is a snapshot of your status at the time you complete it. So at whatever month and year you complete it, that will be your status at that time.

If you turn 24 in November 2010, you will be considered independent when you file your FAFSA in 2011. The filing in any given year concerns itself with the previous 12 month period. When you file as an independent student, you may or may not be eligible for a federal grant. There are a lot of factors to be considered. And just because you are an independent student, doesn't mean that you get 100% "free money." It is highly likely that a student loan will continue to be part of your award package. You might want to go and sit down with your financial aid officer if you have additional questions. That's what they're there for.
