Parents don't files income taxes, how do I get Financial Aid?
-
I am 22 years old and for the past 3 years I've been attending a community college. Well, the time has come and I'd really like to go a to four year university. I have the particular one picked out and it's in NYC. I was accepted and approved for $14,000 worth of financial aid, grants, and scholarships. The only problem is, the approval is awaiting my parents tax records.....Well, the thing is my parents are clearly demented. Because, they haven't been filing their taxes in over 20 years. Which, in turn I CANNOT GET MY FINANCIAL AID! It fills me with so much rage and has caused me to have this severe undercurrent of hatred towards my mother for not being concerned about fixing this mess they got them into, that is in turn hindering me in the most terrible way. Is there ANY WAY, I can still receive this much financial aid, even with out them? I am beyond nervous to tell my adviser about this, because it is so embarrassing. But, I will tell the adviser in order to receive my money. I JUST NEED ADVICE! Also, if you happen to know what will happen to my mother once/if she ever tries to fix it, i'd like to know. She doesn't make much money at all. Just at $30,000. She doesn't owe anything, it's her dead beat husband that does, But, they have been separated for 22 years. So i'm sure she can prove she had nothing to do with his mistakes? IDK.

Answer:
Being an out-of-state student will have nothing to do with being dependent or independent. You will qualify for federal stafford loans if your parents cannot provide their tax documents. The maximum amount a sophomore can borrow is up to $6,500/year. The maximum amount a junior can borrow is up to $7,500/year. You will not still qualify for $14,000/year. One option is to postpone school for one year because at 23 you'll be able to file as an independent student and only use your income. Or, transfer to an in-state 4-year school that can be covered with loan money. If your mother has been separated from her husband for 22 years, why didn't she ever get divorced? The implications of his debt can affect her because they are still married. The penalties will depend on what back-taxes are owed... she should see an accountant. Good luck to you, just remember, next year you will be classified as an independent student.

You can't file as an independent until you're 24, married, or have a baby. whichever comes first. You could just fill it in as "$0" for your parents income? Or yell at your parents? Not sure what to tell you! Ahh! That's crazy!

Any way you can apply as independent? Do you live with her? She could be in a mess of trouble if she gets caught, I would not want to see that happen to your family. Under "special Circumstances, if parent refuses to provide information you can still get stafford loan. See link. Once you apply you get a 4 digit code that is your expected family contribution. So you know how much you are expected to pay almost as soon as you apply. code 1943 means $1493.00 you are expected tp pay per year. Money I can tell you is GUARANTEED to you is the hope scholarship. That is 1200 per year freshman and sophomore year. After that is is 20% of whatever you pay in tuition. You will get this money back in your taxes. -Look up the university. Look up what scholarships that university is offering. It will be on their website. FASFA loans guarantee 2500 per semester freshman and sophomore year.

You do know there is a question on the fafsa that ask if your parents are married but separted. You could just say they are separted and then you'll only be asked to supply your mothers information by inputting a separation date longer than 6 months. However, if your mother made 30,000 dollars, she is required by law to file taxes. And if your office ask for the tax forms, you will have to supply them or you will not get the pell grant. Your best bet is to sit out till your independent based on yoru age, and also stay in NYC to establish residency. Sorry for your situation, and good luck to ya in the future.
