What all can I use my Federal Pell Grant for? Help anyone?

I am a first year college student, hoping some day to become a doctor. I am going to a near by community college for the first two years because it is closer to home. I was awarded a Federal Pell Grant and now I have a few questions. I googled it for hours and I am left feeling even more confused!!! I know that it will cover books and tuition. But what about other school related things? 1. Like gas? Do you know how FAR I live from the school!!?? That could really help! 2. Or wireless internet for my laptop? 3. Or child care for my daughter- when my husband is working and I'm at school? I don't know if it will help with these expenses, but college is not cheap! More and more I am finding this out! These things add up. Even the times when I have to buy fast food because I am in town all day at school! How does it work? Does the grant pay for tuition and books and then they cut you a check for the difference? Someone... help. LOL By the way, I go to: Estrella Mountain Community College Goodyear, Arizona

I dont remember what grant I got when I went to school. But I did receive extra money. More than the cost of school and books. You should look into that. Congrats on going back to school.

Pell Grant will only pay for tuition; your college decideds how much you will get. If you qualified for a Pell Grant then you probably qualified for and SEOG Grant and an OTAG Grant: These will helps pay for your books. There is no disbursment to you for gas/childcare.

Pell grants are only for tuition and books plus whatever fees the college charges, they cannot be used to pay for any of the items you mention.
