Why did I get denied for student loans?

Are there any other student loans (besides federal) with fixed rates?

  • My school told me that I can get the full stafford loan which is going to be 6500 dollars. That will cover most of my tuition for the school year. Left is room and board which is almost 3000 dollars by itself. Is it possible to get a private student loan that is fixed? I don't have perfect credit but it's "okay". My parent's credit is okay but I'm afraid we'll get denied for a PLUS loan. I read that if you get denied for a PLUS, you can seek out more stafford loan but not exceed the max. Well I'm already receiving the max. I don't get any financial aid other than loans. What are my options? Thank you in advance.

  • Answer:

The "max" they are talking about is the amount of stafford that an 'independent' student would qualify for. In other words, if your parents are rejected, you become (in the eyes of the federal government loan program) a student who qualifies for the amount of loans that an independent student qualifies for, or if you are getting $6,500 then you would qualify for $10,500 total. But it's not that easy to get rejected for a Parent PLUS loan. Even though there are credit requirements, they are lenient. If your parents are willing, they should apply.
