SAP Help! Do I have a shot?
-
I enrolled in college right after high school and ultimately just stopped going. I received all F's because I never actually withdrew. My mother had recently gotten remarried and moved away to Michigan and for the first time in my life I had no guidance or rules to obey. I do realize that is no excuse, but at 18 years old I could have cared less. At that point in my life I was working a full time factory job, trying to go to school and trying to figure out what I wanted to do ith my life. About 2 years ago I was disgnosed with Adult ADD. My life has completely changed. I have been at the same job for the last 3 years and have settled down and become a complete family man. I am happily married with a 5, 4, and a 3 year old. I have been awarded several national awards thru work and my life is going great. The only thing I seem to be missing is a college degree. It seems these days, unless I want to keep making about 45k a year, nobody will even consider your resume without one. I have re enrolled in school but it seems that I am under a SAP suspension from my previous mistakes. I have the right to appeal, but they say it has to be an extraordinary reason. Any thoughts on if I have a shot on winning my appeal Does any body have any ideas on how I should even approach this. I don't think that telling them I was a flake when I was 18 wil work. Thank you so much for your time.

Answer:
Filing an appeal without an "extraordinary" reason may sound like a long shot, but it is worth a try. State in your letter exactly what you mentioned here, as it shows you have matured and it is in fact, the truth. Mention your family and what you would like to become, and you have learned from your mistakes, etcetera. If your appeal gets denied, the other way to regain financial aid is to pay for a couple classes out-of-pocket at a local, cheap community college, pass them and do well and you should be able to raise your GPA to meet the SAP standards. One semester will do. Speak to a financial aid counselor to see your available options and as to other sources you could turn to for college funding. Exhaust all your options and try to steer away from private loans. Goodluck!
