Is financial aid for online students available?

Financial aid available to adult students at community college?

  • I'm an adult with only a few college credits (non-transferable anyway). I am intending to attend a local community college once I've been a resident of this state for 1 year. I've been out of work for over a year now, and am not legally married. While I do own my own home with my partner, I do not have any other assets or income. What I'm wondering is, do adults in their 30s still qualify for financial aid grants? Will the fact that I own a home prevent me from getting any aid? Also I have a student loan from when I was 18 and dropped out of college. Do any of these things make me ineligible for financial aid? (not loans! I'm still trying to pay off my original one with obscene interest rates). Thanks in advance.

It's really hard to tell until you actually fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), as eligibility is based on numerous factors. If you haven't worked for a year, chances are good you will qualify for the Pell Grant. Contact the Financial Aid Office at the school you plan to attend. They will not be able to tell you much until you complete the FAFSA, but they can answer general questions. Also, they can assist you in filling out the FAFSA and searching for scholarships.
