Can I change my parent on FAFSA?

After a name change, can I submit FAFSA with the old name, if I have not yet notified the SS administration?

  • I am changing my last name but I don't want to tell my parent who usually claims me on his tax forms and whose info I need to get fin aid. Is it OK if I delay notifying the SS administration and submit FAFSA under an old name so that it matches the info on my parent's tax forms and the school records? This is my final school year so the point of doing this is to avoid having to tell my parent about the name change. I will update the school records once they give me fin.aid.

    I am very surprised at the completely nonconstructive comments on this post!! The fact of the matter is that the FAFSA links up with the Social Security Administration to do a SSN/Name Check. Be sure the number and name you use for your FAFSA matches *exactly* with what is on file for the SSA. Additionally, you are not required to notify everyone immediately. There is a set period of time for most entities, including the SSA. That will be your first step, then you can take your new SS Card to the DMV, and then everything else needs to be changed very quickly. Keep in mind that your passport will be invalid and you will need to apply for a new one with the new name.

I didn't even know one could change a last name. That was only supposed to happen if one was married. Okay, enough of that. seeing how you managed to, but the social security administration doesn't know about it yet, the only way for financial aid papers to go thru the system is to use the old last name last name issues (married couples) happen at the tax office often

Have you actually gone through the process legally through the court system? Otherwise, you can't just decide to change your name like that. You will need the court documents to change it anywhere.
