Can I get student loans (to go to nursing school) when I have extrermely bad credit and only a part time job?

  • Ok here is the deal. I am a 26 year old who has recently decided that I want to go back to school for nursing. I live in Memphis, TN and we have a nursing school that will pay for your student loans but I have to figure out how and if I can even get a student loan. When I was young, dumb, and stupid I made some mistakes and now I have bad credit (really bad). Also I really have no one to co-sign a loan for me and I don't make enough to pay for it on my own. Can I get a student loan? If so how do I go about the process? Do I need to get accepted to the school and then apply for the loans? When is the best time to apply for grants and my FASFA? If I get accepted to the school but am not able to get the loans what do I do then? Please help!!!!

    Student loans are based on need and the amount of money you make, they don't look at your credit per se. The idea is that this is an investment in your education so they future degree holding you will be able to pay the loans, and since they are guaranteed by the federal government, your bad credit will not put you at risk (I have horrible but credit but was always able to get student loans). The best time to do you FAFSA is as early in the year as possible, January even, even if you don't have your taxes done you can still use your W-2s to calculate. You have to identify on the FAFSA which school you want to have the paperwork sent to and then the school will determine if you are eligible for grants or just loans. There is also the possibility of workstudy. January is best because as schools make decisions about who gets the limited amount of grant money it is first come first serve, but it doesn't matter when you apply if you are just getting loans, so if you are considering going this fall, get your FAFSA filled out right away and sent to the school. The only time you would need a co-signer is if you went with a supplemental loan other than the standard student loans made available by the federal government. The total amount of these loans is limited, so you may find yourself having to pay out of pocket for part of your tuition, books, etc.
