Would 13 credit hours be too little?

Is 13 credit hours too much for my 1st semester?

  • Im going to a community college and i will be taking Math, English, Biology and Psychology= 13 credit hours. This is my 1st semester of college and I have a job, is it too much?

  • Answer:

No, but make sure that you prioritize your time. If you work full-time, you may not have time for socializing; but if you work part-time you should be fine. Do not get behind in your courses because that is what generally gets students in trouble. Schedule times for your homework and make sure that you spend that time on work. Typically you have to spend 2-3 hours per each credit hour on the course each week - sometimes up to 6 hours per credit hour - so, if your English class is 4 credit hours, plan on spending at minimum of 8 - 12 hours each week (outside of class) on homework. 12-15 credit hours is the full-time load that most students take and some take 18-21 credit hours -- but, you'll know after this semester if you can handle it. You'll need full-time hours to qualify for the maximum financial aid; however, if you cannot handle the load drop to part-time because your grades are more important. Good luck to you and have fun!
