Are there any scholarships for high school juniors?

Junior year of high school and still no money for college? What do?

  • I am currently a junior in high school and as the norm for juniors at this time, I've been looking intensively into colleges I want to go to. My parents have saved up absolutely nothing for me for college in my life because we are in the frustrating group of lower middle class, and they can't start saving for me now because they have bills and all that to pay. They also have really bad credit. My friends keep assuring me that if I get scholarships, apply for financial aid and get loans I should be alright for going to college, but my parents keep telling me that I shouldn't even bother because we have no money. I've considered not going to college right after I graduate and to try to save up money for the next year or so, but I really want to go as soon as I graduate. I absolutely hate living here. Is this possible in my financial situation? What should I do?

You might be able to get some FA, both grants and loans. Try to apply to private schools versus state schools. Private schools usually cost more but they also have more scholarship money to give out even if you are not a straight A student, you would be surprised. Be sure to complete the FAFSA form (www.fafsa.ed.gov) ASAP in your senior year. You will need information from the tax return of your parents. They should make sure they submit their taxes very early in Feb of your senior year. Some states have scholarship money but it is only offered if you FAFSA form is completed early. Keep in mind, that any federal free money is based on income of parents, bills will not come to play in federal money. You are always eligible for federal student loans but there are upper limits for the federal loans. The FA offices of the school you will may also offer an appeal system for more FA. Keep trying and don't get discouraged. Good luck

attending college is not a 'given' like breathing not all parents are able to provide their children with college educations, especially now with the costs increasing by the year you certainly can find some way to earn money and start saving yourself, quit relying on your parents for everything and you can certainly attend a local community college for much less money getting the first two years out of the way at your local college is a plus when and if you are able to finally attend a 4 yr college

Going to college right after high school used to be the tradition. Unfortunately it doesn't work out the same for everybody. some go and some can't go, and usually the main reason is they can't afford it. Back when I was in high school (like 10 years ago) if you could not afford college you had to go to work. There was always community college which costs about a 1/3 of regular university. Even if you can't go in the (traditional) fall because you lack money, working even a part time job and saving most of it should be able to afford you the spring semester. Community colleges are great for the working student because you can work while you are in school due to very flexible scheduling. There are even saturday and evening classes. A lot of students do thier first two years there. Then they can get a degree and transfer into a 4 year university or get a better job (since they have degree)
