Dependency on the FAFSA?

How do I do dependency override for FAFSA?

  • I am having problems with Financial Aide, but I was told to do dependency override. Does anyone know what this means? Is this on the website? I am so confused. So any information would be helpful. Thanks!!!

  • Answer:

Having a chid makes you independent. Just fill out the FAFSA paper with the info on your child and you'll have no problem. Talk to you financial aid office if you need help.

You do not do a dependency override...that can only be done by a financial aid administrator at your college. You need to set-up an appointment with a counselor in the aid office to discuss your situation. If you meet the school's criteria they will then grant you a dependency override meaning you will not be required to supply parental information. However, you will need to include your boyfriends support since he is paying all the bills. If the college does not grant you a dependency override then you are out-of-luck unless you can track down your father and he's willing to provide the information for the application.

Since you have a child, one of the questions to determine your dependency is if you have a child you support. If you can answer YES to this, then you don't have to put your parents income. PS: If you had ANY income at all in 2007, be sure you put this on your fafsa.... even if you worked for just a few weeks.

when you fill out your FAFSA, and you're not a dependent, you shouldn't enter any info for your parents. If you already submitted it, you can go back and edit it. Your income totals come from your 2007 taxes.
