How do I defer student loan?

Can you defer a student loan that has a co-signer on it?

  • I am being told that you can defer on a student loan for 6months. But, what if there is a co-signer? Wouldn't that person be liable for the payment?

  • Answer:

No. They are liable if you refuse to pay or cannot, which is not the same thing. The loan is yours - the cosigner just guarantees that it will be paid. They won't bother your cosigner unless you go into default.

nope. they would only be liable when you default on your loan. this means you miss a few loan payments in a row. if you defer or get a forebearance this means your loans would not be in repayment anymore. it would be as if you were in school (except you would still be accruing interest). your co-signer didnt have to make payments while you were in school so youre fine.
