Financial Aid for college courses while still in high school?

If you take summer classes at a different college, can you get financial aid there?

  • If I have accepted a 4-yr financial aid package at one school for engineering, but want to take journalism courses at a different place during the summer, can I accept financial aid at the second college? Thanks!!

  • Answer:

Generally speaking, "visiting" students are not eligible for financial aid. If you're interested in determining your eligibility for summer aid at another school, you should contact the financial aid office at your regular (year-round) school, and inquire about the availability of what's known as "portable' aid. As a rule, however, your eligibility for financial aid is limited to any remaining funds that you did not take during the regular school year. Chances are high that you received and used the full amount of your eligible aid during the Fall and Spring semesters. There are no separate funds available for Summer semester. I hope that helps!
