FAFSA and a Federal Stafford Loan?

  • I am hoping to attend college soon, in order to qualify for financial aid I have to be a full time student. I am a mother of a one year old, and I work a full time job. The only way I can possibly be a full time student AND mother is to quit work. My boyfriend works, but does not make enough money to pay the bills on his own. Is it possible to get financial aid through FAFSA and get a Federal Stafford Loan?

    You don't have to quit work totally.... most people go to school full time and work part time. Consider working about 20 hours a week or so and cut the family expenses so you can keep your standard of living. If you want to not work you will prob have to ask hubby to get a second job. Yes, you can get a Stafford loan by applying for fafsa. (But I would not recommend taking out a student loan your very first semester of college.) If you don't like school and drop out, you still have to pay that money back.

Yes, you can pay with a grant and a loan simultaneously. Your real problem though is that everything in your life is full time. You're a full time mom, full time student, and full time worker. Something has to give. If you were to quit your job and get a p/t job (or go to p/t with your current job) then you would qualify for larger grants and have less need for a loan, so although your paycheck would be smaller you wouldn't actually lose any money. With a larger grant your boyfriend could also devote more of his earned income to taking care of your kid and less to your education. All the best...
