Help With Financial Aid Petition PLEASE!!?
-
My financial aid has been suspended due to a low GPA and not completing 70% of my credits in a term. My Step mother was recently diagnosed with cancer and i have been living of campus commuting an hour each day to class. My grades dropped to Ds and Fs so i stopped attending classes to spend the rest of the term at home with my Step mother. I intended on receiving a probation on my financial aid and retaking the classes this term. I made a mistake when looking over the policies and my GPA is below the minimum for probation. PLEASE help me answer the following questions for my appeal and give your opinion of an example for answering the following 2 questions. 1.In your own words explain why you did not achieve the required credits and/or grade point average. 2. Indicate what action you have taken to prevent or correct the problem. Somebody please help! Writing is not my strength, I am very stressed and want to make sure my petition is accepted as I am not in a situation where i can afford to lose my aid :/. Any comments or sample drafts would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
1. You need to explain your stepmother's health crisis and that you had to stop attending classes to help care for her. Explain this situation in detail and be professional (once you write the letter, have a few people review it for errors). 2. They want to know what you've done to prevent this problem (missing class and failing) from happening again. Relate it to your stepmother's condition. Is she currently in remission? Has your family hired a nurse or caregiver to assist in her care? Also add that you realize your mistake in misunderstanding the school's policy and talk about how important school is to you and your career goals. Do not blame your stepmother's cancer in this paragraph, admit your mistake and write how you've solved the problem. If you were stressed during this health problem (and I imagine you were), talk about the stress you were under and the worry that you felt, and state that next time you are under this much stress that you will schedule an appointment with a school counselor to talk about it (so that you keep your goals in mind). Good luck to you and I hope your stepmother is better.
