Confused about Financial aid and Pell Grants!?
-
I'm 22 and living back at home currently. about to go to college online. Im currently on Social Security Income due to a temporary disability. I applied for the FAFSA and was told by my college that I might also qualify for a Pell Grant of some type. Im a little confused about the money situation. I was always under the impression if you made little income then you werent required to pay back financial aid. is this true? because my advisor told me something like I have to pay them back half or something, but Im not sure if thats correct or not. also. if i qualify for a pell grant which i will find out in a few days do I have to pay that grant back? how much are pell grants typically?

Answer:
I didn't think someone could get SS for a temporary disability. Is your intention to go to work after you graduate? If so, you need to contact the Vocational Rehabilitation office in your area. They also help with tuition and fees and books to get you back in the workforce. Anyway, the key here to answering your question is you have chosen an "on-line" school.... Which typically is 10X the cost of real schools. It is true you do NOT have to pay back Pell grants, but at on-line schools Pell is not enough to cover everything and you have to take out loans to make up the difference. Yes, loans ARE considered financial aid. If you qualify for a Pell grant, it can be anywhere from roughly 400 to 4,500 a year. If you take on line classes at a community college your cost could be enough to be paid by all Pell grants with enough left over to pay your books, get a computer, and maybe put some cash in your hands for misc items.... or you go to an on line school and pay what it would cost to go to Harvard. Read this book. It will help.
