Would I have to pay back the grant?

Would I have to pay back my entire pell grant if I drop my only class this semester?

• I have one class this semester and I plan to drop it, as I have found out I don't need it. The pell grant paid half of the class, about 400. I called my fin aid office and they told me they don't know how much I would have to pay back, but supposedly I would have to pay something back for the pell grant. What?! Why in the world would I have to pay back a GRANT?! I'm confused.College seems more like a scam to me than anything else :/

  You will have to pay a portion back, depending on how much aid was disbursed to you (let's assume your Pell Grant award is $1000 and $400 was paid directly to the college for tuition). You decide to drop the class half way through the semester. The college is required to return $200. You are required to pay back 50% of your unearned aid. $300 is your unearned aid ($600 x .50 = $300). You will need to return $150.
