Do you have to apply to a college before applying for FAFSA?

I am applying to college and after applying to FAFSA, i got an efc index of 5392. what is this (US?

  • i got this rating today and it says that i am entitled to low interest loans and i may be entitled to some grants. what are these grants and where and how do i apply for them and find out if i can qualify etc.

  • Answer:

Your EFC is your Expected Family Contribution. Meaning you parents would pay this amount of money for your education. Now, that's actually the average. Unless you're going to a private or Ivy league school, then your tuition would be in the higher thousands. For the Pell Grant you need atleast 4k or under, but you have 5k. Depending on where you go to school it would be determined if you even need a grant. Loans would probably be your best bet. Also your EFC number is what you show schools, that is what qualifies you for grants. If it's too low compared to their tuition rates then you'd get some help from them.
