What is a good EFC number?

What is a good Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number to have?

  • I know 0 is the lowest and therefore the best, but how high does the scale go and what is the range of numbers to expect a good financial aid package from? I know it can differ from schools, but which numbers are expected to receive decent aid from? Basicly I have a 292 and want to know where I stand with the pack.

    Well mine was 298 and I used just my income instead of my moms. I had 569 last year and my financial aid came to like 2,000 dollars, so you should be ok. I know a person that got like 4035 so I think it goes to like 5000. You can talk to your financial aid advisor at your school about it, she can let you know roughly what you should get back. My husband and I both attend college and our EFC is somewhere around 1700, we recieve somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 each year, so we get about 1250 each semeseter in grants. A friend of ours recieved about 4000 with an EFC of 0. Also grants go by the number of hours you have completed, if you are starting out with no hours then you will recieve less money. After 32 hours the amount you receive increases. The amount you receive will also depend of the COA (cost of attendance) of the school you are wanting to attend.

wow, that is low, mine was 552 last year, and I got enough pell grants to cover my entire year, books included, with some left over for gas :)

I'm not sure but 292 is good......all it means is that you have to find $292 to pay for school for the whole year...You can pay out of pocket, find scholarships, grants or loans. My EFC is 2031 & a student I was helping had 3108...so consider yourself lucky.
