What is the best financial strategy for paying back student loans?

Paying back student loans?

  • I am in graduate school right now and do no have to pay back my student loans until I graduate. I took out about 50,000 in private loans through citibank and they said I have to pay back $550 a month as soon as I graduate even if I don't have a job. I've asked if its possible to extend the amount of time I have to pay them back to lower the payments and they said no. Does anyone know any other ways to lower these payments? Because I still have $80,000 in gov. loans which I have to pay back and it would be impossible to try and survive if I don't have a job and have to pay back all of these loans. I know the gov. loans are easier to work with but does anyone have any suggestions about the private loans? thanks

Its a different systen here in the UK. You don't start paying it back until you're earning, and then it depends on the amount you are earning with regards to your repayment amounts : D
